GARY COOPER The Montana outdoorsman became Mr. America and played many of its emblematic roles-John Doe (in 'Meet John Doe'), 'Sergeant York', Longfellow Deeds (in 'The Pride of the Yankees'). Ernest Hemingway himself picked Cooper for the part of Robert Jordan in 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'. Reserved to the point of being monosyllabic as Marshal Will Kane in 'High Noon', he personified the connection (in talkies) between the strong and the silent.
